Church News

Woodward Park Baptist Church, Fresno is involved in a new ministry to international students: Conversational English Partners. Conversational English Partners is an intermediate and advanced conversational English program for international students in the greater Fresno area. The ministry is offered once a week for about an hour. As added incentive to international students is that a free American meal if offered every week prior to the program. Conversational English Partners is an effective way for international students to practice English conversation skills in a small group setting. One American partner meets with one to three international students and practices conversation. The groups meet men with men women with women. Different topics are offered every week. The topics are secular, but church members share Christ as the opportunity arises. During the last 5 - 10 minutes of the program, every American partner prays aloud for any prayer requests his/her international partner shares. Church members need no prior ESL training to work in the program. Susan Jones of Woodward Park Baptist is leading this ministry.

Boot Camp - Wednesday Night Praise Report

From Carol Climer:

Team Leaders!!!

Thank you for hosting another successful party!!!! The event at Boot Camp (for those of you who have never been to the party) is very different than Juvenile Hall. The cadets come into their cafeteria and stay seated at tables. The only time they can get up is to go through the food line. Also, the cadets cannot receive gifts. We are on a strict time limit and the cadets march out by 8:00 p.m.

Last night Jason Oxford (Cornelia Avenue Southern Baptist Church) led the group in singing Christmas Carols. He does a great job moving around the room and inner acting with the boys. Tom Sims (pastor of Baptist Temple) tells the Christmas story in a very unique way and then finishes with a beautiful solo (if you have never heard Tom sing you have missed a blessing). The boys are spell bound when he sings. Randy Maynard (pastor of Cornelia Avenue Southern Baptist Church) then read the Christmas story from the Bible. He has a unique love for these cadets and communicates that very effectively as he talks to each boy personally.

The boys then go through the food line (twice!!!). Our volunteers mingle with the boys as they eat and share one on one with them.

I want to take this opportunity to personally thank Janice Oxford (Cornelia Avenue) organizing this party - this one is not easy. She also prepares all the refreshments for the outside staff at Juvenile Hall - beautifully packaged.

The stats are as follows:

6 Churches with
25 Volunteers - ministered to
136 Cadets and
12 Officers with
63 Professions of Faith and
32 Rededicaitons

Grand Total for Three Nights:

17 Southern Baptist Church Involved with
289 Volunteers - ministered to
472 Youth and
111 Staff with
177 Professions of Faith and
105 Rededications

This is AMAZING GRACE!! Thank you for all that you have done and will continue to do for the troubled youth in Fresno County. The prayer requests that the boys and girls wrote down are being typed up (not an easy job) by Dee Ann Douglass (Baptist Temple). Her goal is to get them to you by Saturday so your group and/or church will have the opportunity to continue to pray for the kids you ministered to.

Thank you again for your hard work - which paid off without any incidents of any kind - for the 33rd year!!!!

May God bless you all for the masterpiece you participated in - in changing the lives of those incarcerated.

Covered by His grace,
Carol

Juvenile Hall - Tuesday Night Praise Report

Team Leaders!!!

What a great time we had on the commitment side tonight! You are all to be congratulated on the great parties you hosted. Thank you for leading and enlisting servant volunteers.

Stats for Tuesday Night:

8 Churches participated with
121 Volunteers present (a total of 154 signed up)

149 Incarcerated youth received gifts and a party with
41 Staff attending the parties

33 Youth accepted Christ
42 Made rededications

Totals for Both Nights

18 Churches participated (some did parties both nights)
264 Volunteers attended
306 Youth were ministered to (with 30 in lock down - ministered to one on one)
99 Staff attended the parties
459 Gift bags were given to the youth and staff
114 Youth made professions of faith
73 Youth made rededications

Note to Entire Monday and Tuesday Group: I applaud each and everyone of you and your groups. Ronnie and I were so proud of the way you handled your units. Thank you for the food and drinks you provided to the kids and staff. The staff just could not say enough good things about the parties. They said you are great people and that it was a pleasure for them to work with you.

Tonight we had a small challenge with our high security unit but Northpointe stepped up to the plate and made it work. They had to divide their group into two parts and conduct two simultaneous parties with programs and refreshments being in separate rooms.

I want to personally thank First Southern, Sanger - First Southern, Reedley - and Lifeway for going the second mile in hosting parties for both nights. Tonight they hosted the SAU (substance abuse unit) and 29 visiting parents. These churches provided food for 100 (lots of staff in this area). We were able to give an ornament and a bag of candy (Janice Oxford from Cornelia Avenue bagged these) to each parent as they left the facility.

I'm asking that you share the results with your pastors and church leaders. We are so proud of Southern Baptists and the ministry they provide with this event each year. Thank you for your faithfulness. Please be in prayer as we take in approximately 40 volunteers from 7 churches to host one huge party at Boot Camp for 205 cadets and staff tomorrow night.

Standing in awe of His grace,

Carol Climer

Juvenile Hall - Monday Night Praise Report

From: Carol Climer

To: Team Leaders

Thank you for your hard work!!!!!! Tonight was truly a time to give God all the glory. He touched this event with His hand of grace!!!

I've just finished adding all the numbers and wanted to give you the results of the Monday night party. This is also being sent to those of you who will be leading the Tuesday night party.

Keep in mind that this event is put on totally by Southern Baptists:

13 Churches Particiapted with
143 Volunteers Present (a Total of 176 signed up)

157 Incarcerated Youth Received gifts and a party with
58 Staff attending the parties

22 Incarcerated Youth were locked down for security purposes and did not have a party but gifts were placed in their property - they will receive the gifts when they are released or change units

210 Bags of gifts were given tonight - 179 given to the youth on the detention side with the remaining 31 to be given to the next 31 kids incarcerated

The reason for the parties is to lead these young people to the saving knowlege of Jesus Christ or to strengthen them in their walk with the Lord through a rededication. Keep in mind that Ron works with 17 chaplains to minister to these kids on a daily basis - so your efforts and results tonight are a huge blessing and will require lots of hours of follow up - praise God!!!!

81 Youth accepted Christ
31 Made Rededications

And the majority asked for prayer. One of my volunteers will be typing up the decision sheets and you will be emailed your groups decisions and prayer requests (hopefully this week).

The staff praised all of you!!!! They were so pleased with your smiles, attitudes, and your preparations for the kids with absolutely no problems in the units. Thank you for your sweet spirits in the units tonight.

We want to especially thank Alma Bray and her team from Sierra Heights for their understanding attitude and gracious relocation. For those of you not present tonight - Alma's group has done the high security unit for 32 years - tonight her unit - for the first time was locked down - so we reassigned them to work with another group. No complaints - just a willingness to serve!!!!

You left your fingerprints in the hearts of young people tonight that God will nurture for the rest of their lives. Thank you for sharing your love and truth of our Saviour with these young incarcerated youth.

In awe of God's grace,
Carol
